On June 30, 1948, President Harry Truman signs the bill proclaiming February 1 as National Freedom Day. This holiday was established on June 30th, 1948 by proclamation by President Harry Truman. National Freedom Day was founded to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as U.S. citizens and to commemorate the day in 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln signed a resolution proposing to outlaw slavery which would later become the 13th Amendment which effectively ended slavery.
