Assessing Heritage Tourism Potential
Development of a heritage tourism assessment and effective strategic plan requires the combination of both participatory assessment and market analysis. To thoroughly understand the current situation, extensive information on existing cultural and heritage assets must be compiled, organized and analyzed.
Heritage tourism must be locally driven to accurately reflect the culture, values and goals of a community or heritage area. Collectively, a community must decide what resources it wants to share with visitors and then work together to develop a strategy that benefits everyone. The HAR Team will collaborate with your community and its other municipalities, local tourism professionals, and other relevant stakeholders to identify and obtain information on cultural heritage assets.
The ForeSite Consulting (ForeSite) team will assist you, step-by-step, through the strategic planning process. We will work with you to develop and implement an effective plan for success – whether you lead a government agency, nonprofit or private for-profit business. ForeSite will facilitate the conceptualization of the local partners’ vision; help define cultural heritage tourism goals; and provide strategies and recommended actions to achieve those goals. We provide strategic planning facilitation, including customizing the strategic planning process and materials to suit your organization’s needs.
A heritage tourism assessment includes tours of cultural heritage attractions and one-to-one interviews with stakeholders to evaluate the tourism experience and begin to understand the stakeholders’ perceptions about tourism and explore their visions for future cultural heritage tourism. Discussions with partners and stakeholders will help shape the direction of the community assessments and address outstanding questions from the information entered into the heritage resource inventory survey database.
An in-depth analysis, identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to future development and promotion of heritage tourism attractions, will be performed to assess existing tourism conditions in your community or heritage area. The ForeSite team will help define the target market(s) and recommend specific initiatives and the strategies to implement them.
